29th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Reflection: In today’s gospel, Jesus explains the importance of service and sacrifice in the life of a disciple. In particular, he seems to be preparing the Twelve for their leadership roles in the emerging Christian community.  Therefore, Jesus acknowledges that his teaching is countercultural. In today’s Gospel, Jesus contrasts the dynamics within the community of disciples with those shown by the rulers of the Gentiles.  Following Jesus’ example of sacrificial love continues to be countercultural in our day as well. We might take this opportunity to consider our models of authority and examine our own exercise of authority. On whose example do we model our leadership?

Please Pray for the Sick: Donni Coakley, P J Tunney, Veronica Ugo, Lily Rahim, Patrick O’Reilly, Trisha Weldon, John Curry and Pat Hillman. Please also pray those who have died recently and all the Souls of the faithful departed.

28th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Reflection: Our riches are not bad unless they prevent our hearts from showing love and sharing our good fortune with those around us. Wealth can stunt love because we are so afraid of losing it.  We can easily get attached to material things, money, property, good looks, having the most up to-date clothes. It is real love that nourishes us and helps us grow in God’s love.

In today’s Gospel Jesus looked at the man with a real love.  Not the love of affection or attraction.  It is the love of agape (‘agaph), a love which desires the best possible thing for the other.  This man was good but Jesus wanted him to be even better.

God shares his eternal life of happiness with us.  He shares the love of his heart. A grateful heart will encourage us to share and to remain human and humble. Lord helps me be poor in heart, knowing that all I am is from you.
